Constitutions reflect the vales that a country regards as important. Pre-confederation period: small population, scattered over great distance, divided by economics, language, religious beliefs, law and education, threat from usa, needed a real union (kingdom of canada, unity with diversity, not by imperial fiat. Post 1867: nova scotia, wanted out thought it was a bad idea kind of undersold it self, actually did leave. 1914: ww one: this war helped canada come to age, recognized (canadian identity) 1931: statue of westminster: limited britain"s legislative authority over canada. 1939: ww two: played significant role in ww two. 1949: constitutional amendment: gave some control of constitution over to govt, federal govt could appeal to british council, now scc is highest court in land, that relationship w/ britain is kind of going away.
