Earth Sciences 1086F/G Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Martian Meteorite, Achondrite, Chondrite
Document Summary
Two basic classi cations:: finds - meteorite that is stumbled upon, no knowledge of when it got there, falls - meteorite that we have witnessed enter earth"s atmosphere, and collected most or all. All meteorites are named according to the geographical location that they are found, and this is governed by the nomenclature committee of the meteorological society! Least sophisticated form of classi cation (according to mineral content) is:: irons (siderites) - consist of mostly iron and nickel, stony-irons (siderolites)- a 50-50 mix of metals and a non-metallic silicate that looks like stone, stones (aerolites) ! Derived from greek word chondros (grain or seed)! Speci cally refers to the small rounded inclusions in the chondrites called chondrules! Several groups covered by carbonaceous chondrites which accounts for the sooty look! Process of clumping together of various products appearing on chondrites is called accretion!
