Is the product of a gigantic glancing collision between earth and theia. Moon is relatively low density material rich in silicon, aluminum, magnesium, and oxygen. Tidal coupling: when a planets gravitational force on a satellite is so strong that it forces the satellite into exactly the same rotational period and orbital period as the planet. Moon and the earth are tidal coupled. Trojan satellite: an object that has the same orbit as another body, but doesn"t actually collide with that body because its located in a particular point on the orbit- called ta. Lagrangian point- where it can remain stable and not collide with the other body. Earth has had at least one trojan satellite. Moon is airless (and therefore soundless) and have a love escape velocity allowing gas atoms near its surface to escape easily into space. Escape velocity: the initial velocity any object needs to escape gravity.
