Nature doesn"t care about individual deaths, it only cares about the species as a whole. Tennyson thinks of his friend as one of the wasted lives. He is in an evil dream where most lives are wasted and his friend is one of them: thomas malthus: Was an economist (word didn"t exist back then but closest description to what he did) Biggest contribution was that wage labor/price of labor would always drop to the absolute minimum necessary to survive just above the level of starvation. Understood human beings as like other species, where they would reproduce until they exceed the material means available for their support. There will always be more people than you can feed. He changes the meaning of the word species , he messes with how people use language to describe the world: darwinian statement that the mind and body will tend to progress towards perfection:
