English 1022E Lecture Notes - Lecture 24: Sophocles
Document Summary
This is a play without a hero. You don"t know who to feel for. Occurs in a context of real loss. This means antigone is only surviving member of real family. Real loss and trauma for antigone and ismene. One character over-values the bond of blood (antigone), one character under- values the bond of blood (creon), he is her uncle. Antigone doesn"t necessarily value her bond with her sister. Loyal to her dead brother, but does not seem to care much about ismene. Creon"s difficulty with antigone has everything to do with the fact that she is a woman. It is not anger toward her arbitrary desire to mourn; it seems because she is a woman standing up to a man. Antigone is loyal to the dead, and not very loyal to the living. She will give up her life for the dead. She has straight up decided to be loyal to her brother instead (arbitrarily)
