Environmental Science 1021F/G Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Hydrogen Sulfide, Sewage Sludge, Secondary Treatment
Document Summary
Water pollution: any chemical, biological, or physical change in water quantity that is harmful: physical change is thermal water pollution. A large presence of fish fly, as well as their babies, are available. Point sources: are easily identifiable as they are usually pipes directly. Nonpoint sources: runoff where generally you know where they are coming from, but you can not identify specifics. Number 1: agriculture: sediment, fertilizers, pesticides, water. Number 3: mining: sediments, chemical runoff. Moderate pollution rapidly recoverable; due to high flow/mixing. Developed countries: sharply reduced point-source pollution, non-point sources still a problem. Developing countries: serious and growing problem, poverty, no laws, population, religious/cultural traditions. ****in streams and rivers: dilution and biodegradation naturally remove/reduce pollution to a limit. Too much pollution inhibits natural recovery or if river/stream is not flowing or has reduced flow. ***in developed countries: wastewater treatment plants and laws for industries mean point source pollution is not as much of a problem right now.
