One might say that film came into its own as an art form with edwin s. porter"s film the. Narrative the recounting of real or fictitious events. It refers to the strategies, codes, and conventions that organize a story. Story what the director or screenwriter has in mind that they wish to reveal through the plot and narrative strategy, the subject matter or raw material of the narrative. While propp was speaking specifically about russian folktales, these categories work quite well with cinema, each of propp"s character possibilities contains both ordinary and extra ordinary qualities. There are limited number of possible plot structures: prohibition, struggle, return, recognition. According to vladimir propp (russian literary theorist) there are also a limited number of character possibilities: villian, hero, the donor (who prepares the hero, the helper, the sought-for person.
