A commentary on the right-wing politics in britain. Dreams of prosperity that should have come after wwii but didn"t. Irony that fascism/conservatism rises in britain after the war. Reflecting on the trauma of wwi and anticipating the politics that would lead to the horrors of wwii. Lighting was heavy shadows with intense contrast between light and dark. This sort of approach was justified because straight-forward realism could not accurately depict the absurdity, senselessness, and horror of real war. People saw images and film from the front lines for the first time. Some soldiers survived and came back thanks to medical improvement. They returned with ptsd, missing limbs, unable to reintegrate into society. This reminded the public of war and influenced german expressionist cinema. These films were rooted in the social and political reality. Replacement of father figure - his father has died. Theme: the failure of authority figures to nurture and provide for the young.
