Film Studies 1022 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Silent Film, Magnetic Stripe Card, Cinematic Techniques
Document Summary
Alters an image, whether obvious or subtle. In theatrical performances they were usually accompanied by music. Were never silent, always had some form of sound. Would be introduced and sometimes explained by master of ceremonies. Professional stage actors behind the screen reading the dialog. Mid 1930s technical problems with conversion to sound were worked out. Was not a lot of competition in the industry for creating the sound system. Studios agreed to adopt the system in which the soundtrack is recorded on the strip of film right alongside the images. A mic cates sound, converts it into electrical impulses which are changed into light impulses, then photographed right onto the film strip, they appear in the space between the frames of the images. During project the optical sound system runs past a light bulb and the process is reverse. A later version: magnetic strip was no introduced until 1958-59. Microphones were very limited in range, limiting the actor"s motions.
