Carbs can be classi ed as simple or complex (terms used to classify carbs based on the number of sugar molecules present) Simple: one or two molecules (monosaccharides and disaccharides) Glucose: most abundant sugar molecule in our diet, good energy source. Fructose: sweetest natural sugar, found in fruit, high fructose corn syrup. Galactose: does not occur alone in foods; binds with glucose to form lactose. Each of those monosaccharides contain 6 carbon, 12 hydrogen, and 6 oxygen. Ribose: another monosaccharide, 5 carbons, located in the genetic material of our cells.
