Temperance
- America known globally as the alcoholic nation
- Average American adult (men and women) drank about 5 gallons of hard liquor every year
- Problems connected with alcohol
o Crime and poverty
▪ Bar fights, being arrested for drunk and disorderly conduct
▪ Constantly spending money on alcohol in the bar or on alcohol
• Money not going to rent, food or child’s education (ie. A trust fund)
• See a class issue that comes to play

▪ Issue of domestic abuse becomes a part of the dialogue
▪ Drunk men would beat either their wives or children
• This isn’t how American women should be treated, they are to be held on
a pedestal and to be worshipped

• factory owners facing difficulties with drunk workers (losing limbs to
workplace accidents) becomes a concern about production

o Wold have to stop the machine to remove the limbs, etc.
• Hangovers, slowing down production
