October 02, 2012 2501 The Colonial Church - the clergy had to swear an oath that they would not violate any of the crown’s rights - diff between church and cathedral: o Bishops are in charge of the cathedral - The religious role & conversion o Wherever you turn, the church is there. Hard to separate the secular from the religious o 1520’s- Trying to keep the Catholic Church from collapsing- reformation. Had Missionary church- teaching churches o gods and saints merge into one o if they - The church as an agent of the state o teaching them culture o teaching them Spanish o converting people, making the empire larger o church is serving a political purpose - The Economic role of the church o Many left part of their wealth to the church for charitable purposes so that they could get into heaven o C
