Drugs: chemicals other than food intended to affect the structure/function of the body, abuse and addiction - serious risks, psychoactive drugs: alter person"s consciousness/experience. Set of negative symptoms resulting from going without the drug: most people who engage in addictive behaviours do not develop problems. Financial problems and suicide: 9 characteristics associated with gambling disorder, compulsive exercising, often accompanied by anorexia and bulimia (chp 4, dissatisfaction of body image, work addiction, workaholic. Likely to neglect other sections of life: well known risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Sex obsessed and using sex to feel better: online world, pornography, exchanging sexual content with others. Internet sex addiction: cannot control sex drive, compulsive buying/shopping, repeatedly gives into impulse to buy more than they need/afford, usually buy luxury rather than daily necessities.
