Document Summary

Habits that have gotten out of control, with a resulting negative impact on a person"s health. Five characteristics typically associated with addictive behaviours: 1) reinforcement, 2) compulsion or craving, 3) loss of control, 4) escalation, 5) negative consequences. Many behaviours are addictive, but most people who engage in them do not develop problems. If a person becomes dependent and tolerance develops, the behaviour is likely to become a central focus in the person"s life. No single cause of addiction: the individual, environment, and substance/behaviour combine, individuals with trouble dealing with stress may be more susceptible to addiction, some people may also have a genetic predisposition to addiction. 18-25 is the age for addiction, not past 30. The right medication with the right therapy can give an individual a leg up. Addiction is adaption in the brain that leads to changes in the behaviour and people cannot then control the intake of the drug.
