Health Sciences 3300A/B Lecture 9: Lecture 9 - Thyroid & Parathyroid, Adrenals, Pancreas, & Thymus
Document Summary
Lecture 9 - thyroid & parathyroid, adrenals, pancreas, & thymus. One of the most exposed glands of the body. Sits on the trachea below the adam"s apple. Has two lateral lobes that are connected by an isthmus (bridge) which allow the lobes to communicate. Blood supply comes from two different sides to ensure sufficient vascular supply. Endocrine glands are the most vascularized because they secrete hormones into the bloodstream. Composed of a superior and inferior circulation entering the thyroid. Comes from the internal carotid artery - passes the larynx. You can still get blood from inferior circulation if a plaque occurs. Creates hormones to be released in the body - which leads to a good venus network. Three major veins on each side to help drain the thyroid properly. Sympathetic ganglia help to maintain the function of the thyroid. They branch off of the sympathetic trunk. The prevertebral fascia separates the vertebrae from the anterior neck.
