Kinesiology 1080A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Intraparietal Sulcus, Alpha Motor Neuron, Split-Brain
Document Summary
Short term cooling of the monkey"s sma (or can be removed for long-term effects) Monkeys have to grab food from a little well, required independent bi-lateral activation. Reach with one hand under and use one hand to get the peanut. Lesion in sma makes monkey looses bi-lateral coordination and they will permanently loose the ability. Monkey with ablated sma will perform the same movement with both limbs, and cannot coordinate independent movements of each limb (both fingers will poke together, one pushing down in the well and one pushing up. Output to corticospinal pathway as well as extensive communication with m1. Projections terminate on hand and finger musculature. Sequence specific (some neurons fire only in relation to a specific movement sequence) Activity increases in relation to movement complexity. In monkeys, damage to sma produces deficits in bimanual coordination. Sends direct signals to the spinal cord (direct communication) and synapses on the alpha motor neurons that control hand musculature.
