Document Summary

Cigar-shaped structure connected in parallel with extrafusal muscle ibers. Provide informaion about dynamic (velocity) stretch of the muscle. Two types: type ia and type ii bag and chain ibers: bag ibers have type ia and type ii receptors, chain ibers are limited to type ii receptors. As stretch increases output from spindles increase (monitors stretch within the muscle: monitor stretch of extrafusal muscle ibers. Type ia really sensiive to rapid stretch of the muscle (i. e. , when the agonist irst begins contracion) Simplest stretch relex monosynapic, and the ime it takes. Important because: provides important informaion to diagnose upper and lower motor neuron injurys. Hyper-relexia (exaggerated) have an exaggerated stretch relex; individuals with cerebral palsy. Hypo-relexia (absence) have lower motor neuron injury (pinched nerves) informaion from the muscle spindles cannot get into the spinal cord appropriately so it cant synapse properly. Important in catching an object, and maintaining hold on an object.
