Kinesiology 1080A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex, Stroop Effect, Binary Logarithm
Document Summary
We process information similar to a computer. Stages of information processing are serial and discrete. Once stimulus is identified, the appropriate action must be taken (i. e. , to brake or swerve to avoid a car) Factors influencing response selection: number of stimulus response alternatives, stimulus (spatial) compatibility. Increasing the number of alternatives relevant to a response increases the time required to process and select an appropriate response: as you increase the number of sl alternatives, you get inn increase in reaction time. Hicks law: task: choice reaction time task, results: rt increased by 150ms each time the s-r- alternatives doubled; thus, relationship between choice rt and the logarithm of the sr alternatives is linear. Log-linear relationship that allows someone to predict reaction time. Process of solving uncertainty in the brain is logarithmic in nature: a + b[log2(n)] tells you what the change in y is. One you have a and b you can use those to predict something choice rt.
