Kinesiology 3222A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Ovulation, Internal Carotid Artery, Orgasm
Document Summary
Hypophyseal fossa (of sphenoid) o o o. Optic chiasma = anterior boundary of pituitary. Arteries - superior and inferior hypophyseal arteries. Veins - anterior and posterior hypophyseal veins. Nerve fibres and axon terminals o o. Stores and release hormones: does not synthesize hormones (therefore not a true endocrine gland) Within tract: axons from the son (supraoptic nucleus, axons from the pvn (paraventricular nucleus) Stimulated by stretching of uterus and cervix. No direct connection to hypothalamus: only vascular connection o. Portal system - capillary bed, veins, another capillary bed o. Internal carotid artery --> superior hypophyseal artery: anterior hypophyseal veins --> dural sinuses o. Secondary capillary bed - responds to factors from hypothalamus: hormonal regulation. Pituitary located in an enclosed space - pushed out of fossa onto surface of brain: may involve cells that produce hormones - too many can be a bad thing. Symptoms: any cell type can undergo hyperplasia, hormone excesses reflective of cell type involved, mass effects.
