Kinesiology 3336A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Soft Tissue, Heat Therapy, The First 48
Document Summary
Body goes through a predictable sequence of healing. Our treatment/modality choice will be dependent on the phase of healing. Minimal ability to speed up this process, but interfering with this sequence will slow both recovery and return to sport. Overlap between the phases- depending on injury and person. Cellular injury = altered metabolism + release of chemical mediators/proteins. Swelling, hot (increased temperature), redness, pain, loss of function. Goal is to prevent as much secondary damage as possible. Feel like they are ready to go back, less swelling/redness: don"t let them return to play, tissue isn"t healed, no nothing that would cause pain in this phase- will tear out tissues. Proliferative and regenerative healing leading to scar formation and repair of injured tissue. Fibroplasia begins within the first few days and the inflammatory signs should be decreased. Need to increase o2 and blood flow. Beware: initially very delicate scar but increase in collagen fibers strengthens it.
