Electrical stimulus applied to a motor nerve elicits contraction of the associated muscle. Discovered the connection that nerves carry electrical impulses: 1855: kollicker and mueller: Demonstrated that the heart beats due to electrical impulses. Showed this by laying electrodes over a beating heart and connected the electrodes to detached frog"s legs. Each time the heartbeat, the frog legs moved: 1880"s: ludwig and maller: Showed that you could contact hearts electrical signal not only by open heart surgery but also electrodes on the skin. Made graph of electrical signals from the heart. Attached sensors to the skin connected with silvered wire suspended through the holes of a magnet (creating a magnetic field) and saw vibration. Light beam across vibrating wire saw shape, qrst wave. Ran wire through magnetic field, through two magnets and rhythmical depolarization generated by the heart was detected. Able to see rhythmical movements of wire, reflects the electrical activity of the heart.
