Syllable initially: lift, leap, alone, rely. Syllable finally precedes consonants: pill, mile, milk, filter. It is necessary to recognize the difference between clear & dark. One can always predict on the basis of context whether one is to have clear (syllable initially) or dark (syllable finally & preceding consonants) = allophones: different realisations of the same phoneme. Used when comparing 2 sounds that show a minimal pair. This has to do with minimal pairs where there is only a single sound change.
