Media, Information and Technoculture 1025F/G Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Deductive Reasoning, Inductive Reasoning
Document Summary
Today"s lecture mainly focuses on different kinds of arguments. Essentially, argument can be categorized into inductive argument and deductive argument. In inductive argument, the premises are intended to provide probable support for the conclusion. An example for this kind of argument is sherlock holmes" deduction based on observation. As for deductive argument, it begins with a contention or proposition and provides a conclusive support for its argument. In other words, the logical process leads the premises directly to the conclusion without any other alternation. Meanwhile, deductive argument can be divided into valid and invalid arguments. Valid argument is an argument in which if the premises are true, the conclusion must be true. It is rather focusing on the structure of the argument than the content. That being said, an argument is valid if, and only if, there is no logically possible situation in which all of its premises are true and its conclusion false.
