The drives, urges, wishes, or desires that initiate the sequence of events leading to a behavior: goals: the sought-after results of motivated behavior. Personally relevant: the extent to which is has direct bearing with significant consequence. Self-concept: our view of who we are. Culturally held beliefs about what is good or appropriate: needs. An internal state of tension cause by disequilibrium from an ideal/ desired physical or psychological. Maslow"s hierarchy of needs: physiological needs (food, water air, shelter, sex), safety & security needs (protection, order, stability), social needs (affection, friendship, belonging) ego needs (prestige, status, self-esteem) self-actualization (self-fulfillment) Lower level needs must be satisfied before higher-level needs become activated. Cultural differences may switch up the order of these. Different ego needs: inward ego need something related to self (i believe i should do something about protecting the environment) vs. outward ego need (wanting to show off yourself to others buying a big car)
