Can come from a number of different sources. 5 major types in 2 dimensions: organizational and personal. Legitimate power: a form of organizational power based on authority or position (formal authority) Higher up in the organization, more legitimate power. Make polite clear requests, don"t exceed scope of authority. Reward power: exists when someone has control over the resources or rewards another person wants (raises, awards etc. ) Offer rewards people desire, don"t promise more than you can deliver. Coercive power: exists when a person has control over punishments in an organization. Exists when one person believes that another has the ability to punish him or her and is willing to use that power.
