From the term medium, a material or a substance through which something is transmitted. Artists" medium : oil or other liquid used to carry color pigment. Psychic mediums : claiming to transmit messages from the dead. Media are mediums of communication (plural of media) Just about anything can be used to transmit a message. Ex: even a t-shirt with writing, a wall with graffiti, a string with cans on the end. In practice, when we talk about media, we usually mean large scale, technologically complex systems of communication. In the 20th century, the media meant communication industries like newspapers, radio, film, tv, reaching big popular audiences. Usually organized in very top-down ways, offering a standardized range of content. Today, this is changing because of computers and digital networks (internet) Media now includes social media and mobile phones. Media is a very important area of employment and work.
