Was the mainstream of popular music studies. Elvis presley (huge rock and roll star, 1950) Became the biggest box office star in the 1960s. Synchronized sound: the combination of image track and soundtrack in such a way that sound and image fit seamlessly together. The microphone was central to al pop music. The film uses the microphone for new kinds of music performance etc. How does the medium affect the choices that are made? (mcluhan the medium is the message) Integrated or backstage musical singing in the rain is both. Revue: a series of songs/dances that are back to back (jukebox no connection to the music that is being played) Integrates: songs/dances into the story line (naturalistic) helps advance the plot, helps to follow the story in a systematic way. Backstage musical: shows how us how the show is put on, behind the camera, showing the issues involved. Broadway: legitimate (high class you made it)
