Media, Information and Technoculture 2500A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Melanoma, Im Yoon-Ah, Late Capitalism
Document Summary
Although kurzweil is right to point to that modern tech is quickly developing to perform the unthinkable, he is wrong to assume that the singularity is the only future possible or only worth considering. To think through these possibilities is breaking through teleology. Requires that we combat prevailing conception of who we are and where we are going. We break from the dangerous presumption that everything has been prepared for us in advance. If we continue to accept the dominant conceptions associated with time, nothing will change. All capitalism ever does is work to keep things the same. Companies no longer develop anything today except for better versions of what we already have. They are evolving better ways to connect, rather than better ways to live. Revolutionary break from what came before is another new application built to make money. Consistently framed, this is simply how we lived.
