“Mass Culture and Mass Media”
-Prior to the experience of Modernity, owning a film would never happen. When you listened to
music, you listened to it together as a group of people.
-Leaves her husband and must take care of her two daughters Silvia and Elga. She
becomes involved and interested in the Communist Party which is her way of finding
value in the collective good over private ownership of something.
-Dies during Mayday Parade.
-Modernity is brought about because of the Revolutions; people wanted to have equal rights,
-Hannah Arendt suggests that we must live with Modernity. We live between the past which
we’ve abandoned and a very uncertain future. We have to learn to think for ourselves.
-She tries to reestablish some tie with the past by learning something about it, identifying with
some moment from history that will teach us about our uncertain future.
-The best places to identify with the past are ‘rupture’ moments (little moments in time).
-Lutes thinks that we should be remembering this moment (Mayday Parade)
-Dream Text: Freud focused on the way dreams are narrated. How we describe our dreams
later. There’s a big distinction between what actually happens in the dream and how you narrate
-Freud says that dreams are a way of thinking. Paying attention to your dreams will help you
understand yourself better.
-Dreams contain manifest and latent content. The surface is disguising the deeper meaning.
Manifest content is the dream text; what you say when you’re speaking about the dream.
-The dream uses the day’s residues as the material to weave the manifest content. The day
residues are the source of the dream.
-The stuff that we pay attention to and weave into our dreams is a front, propaganda for
unconscious desires (the manifest content is the propaganda) and childhood desires, or
-The manifest content is a disguise for unconscious ideas. The dream-work is the disguise.
(condensation, displacement, representability).
-The dream expresses an unconscious wish, or anxiety, which is usually censored in waking life.
-Marthe’s Dream about Kurt and Christmas:
-she wants to bring Kurt home to her family at Christmas?
-she can’t come home for Christmas, but this wish is unconsciously granted in her dream
when she can go home for Christmas.
-she likes Kurt, possibly attracted to his high-class status?
-something we become preoccupied with, we get stuck there.
-WWI represents one of the first and most significant examples of ‘total war’ a war that has
disregard for natural or manmade environment. No specific kind of target, trying to kill
resistance in general.
-Depends on modern technologies: airplanes, machine guns, gas, tanks
-Mass technologies can now destroy human life by the thousands; they destroy from a
distance. Before you had to be close to the people to kill them, now you can be hundreds
of miles away.
- Bombing of Dresden: 50 000 people killed in Feb.1945.
- While the battle at Gettysburg had 1 casualty in 1863
