Four major performers male role (sheng), female role (dan), painted male role (jing) and clown role (chou). Each of these might include some subtypes of roles that fall under them. They also speak a different dialect than the rest of the characters, called the beijing dialect. Makeup is used to tell a lot about the character. Different kinds of characters are painted in specific ways in order to tell the audience about them. All of the characters are meant to be types. People don"t go to the peking opera to see well developed, 3d characters. Before pupils can learn, they have to be immersed in the cultural environment. Most students begin the training at age 8-10.
