Nurse leader and pioneer in psychiatric nursing. Therapeutic communication is key in the relationship. Nurse is to focus on every interaction through active listening and therapeutic communication: this will produce effective results. Nurse-patient: get to know each other, understand roles/expectations. Patient expresses a felt need : nurse reacts to the expressed need. Focus: nurse enacts roles of, patient exploits resources to improve health. Uses resources available to the fullest to help with needs. Expected to move from dependence to independence (balanced) To facilitate development toward well-being (dependence to independence) Patient"s continued movement from dependence to independence: process does not end until relationship ends. Completion of this phase results in mutual termination of nurse-patient relationship & planning future sources for support. Anxiety is an energy that emerges in response to a real or perceived threat: threat may be perceived much bigger or smaller than actual amount. It is an unpleasant state of uneasiness or tension.
