Nurses must fully understand how to assess the value of qualitative research, particularly in the view o the requirement that nursing practice be evidence based. Evidence-informed practice requires the integration of critical appraisal with the clinical expertise and the patient"s unique biology, values, and circumstances. Qualitative research is exploratory and researchers use it to explore a topic when the variables and theory base are unknown. The goal is to understand human beings" experiences in a humanistic and interpretive way. You should not expect to nd a hypotheses; theoretical frameworks; dependent and independent variables; large, random samples; complex statistical procedures; scaled instruments; or de nitive conclusions about how to use the ndings. Generally written in a way that allows the researcher to convey the full meaning and complexity of the phenomena, or cultures being studied. The goal is to describe in as much detail as possible the insider"s, or emic, view of the phenomenon being studied.
