Pathology 3245B Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Acute Kidney Injury, Renal Pyramids, Mechanical Filter
Document Summary
Path jan 21 kidney and urinary tract. Urine drips out at tips of the renal capillaires (bowman"s) capsule collect filtrate surrounded by cells that grab onto capillaries and grab onto them tightly (podocytes) foot stuff that wrap around them in finger-like way fenestrations filter. Mesh wall full of proteins (collagen meshwork) outside of blood vessels have the foot processes making the slits; not passive, also have protein meshwork. Meshwork has a charge on it so will repel some negative proteins and size cut off. But some of the small good stuff goes through the filter so body has to reclaim that. Body spends a lot of time with processes brush border to increase surface area of tubules resorb water and ions. Acute renal failure: acute onset of symptoms, potentially reversible. Chronic renal failure: often asymptomatic at first, slowly progressive and irreversible damage, loss of glomeruli, chronic inflammation, scarring.
