Sequalae of atherosclerosis: emphasis on ischemic heart disease. Circulatory system diseases = cardiovascular disease = heart + cerebrovascular disease + other. 2nd and 3rd leading causes of death in canada (2011, both sexes) Males have higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease overall (esp heart disease and have higher mortality rate than women) Males have higher risk of developing cerebrovascular disease (stroke), however males are less likely to die from stroke than women. Most of cardiovascular disease = atherosclerosis (related to atherosclerosis) There are 2 different conditions: arteriosclerosis and atherosclerosis. Monckeberg medial sclerosis (aging) calcification in walls (middle portion of wall) and not clinically significant. Arteriolosclerosis (two main types: hyaline and hyperplastic; often associated with hypertension) arteriolar, thickened walls; small muscular arteries and arterioles. Atherosclerosis involves medium and large vessels; hardening and deposition of fat in walls. Affects large and medium-sized arteries, therefore a systemic disease (involves both muscular and elastic arteries; affects all over the body)
