Pathology 2420A Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Oncotic Pressure, Vascular Permeability, Fluid Compartments
Document Summary
Disturbances of blood flow and body fluids - key terms. Blood pressure - the pressure of the blood on the walls of the arteries, dependent on the energy of the heart action, elasticity of the arterial walls, and volume and viscosity of the blood. Edema - an abnormal collection of fluid outside of the blood vessels and cells in the interstitial or intercellular tissue spaces. Embolism - the sudden blocking of an artery by a clot or foreign material, which has been brought to its site of lodgment by the blood current. Embolus - a clot or other plug brought by the blood from one vessel to another obstructing the circulation; may be solid, liquid or gaseous (air). Extracellular - fluid found outside of the cells; can be further divided into intravascular compartment (the plasma inside blood and lymph vessels) and interstitial compartment (in the matrix of tissues between vessels and cells); extracellular fluid (ecf).
