Pathology 2420A Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Necrosis, Hemodynamics, Tachypnea
Document Summary
A 72 year-old woman had originally been admitted to hospital with chest pain and had coughed up blood. Disturbed blood flow and hemodynamics:this is a good case in which to review several aspects of disturbed blood flow and hemodynamics. In this case, in an elderly woman, a thrombus has formed in a deep leg vein. Review the factors that contribute to the formation of a thrombus. Emboli have formed from this thrombus and travelled through the blood to become lodged in the lung blood vessels. Review the definition of a thrombus versus an embolus. In this case multiple emboli have caused infarcts in the lung, severely injuring tissue and resulting in cell death and necrosis. (remember the mechanisms of ischemic tissue necrosis from the cell injury lesson. ) An infarct is a localized area of necrosis in a tissue resulting from the sudden reduction of the blood supply.
