Instead of using mathematical reasoning, system 1 uses heuristics: rules of thumb that are effortlessly applied: these heuristics can get things right, but they can also systematically lead to errors biases. In this lecture, we will discuss two heuristics the availability heuristic and the representativeness heuristic and the errors to which they can lead. Swedish novelists, and indeed there are more: but our use of the availability heuristic also leads to two kinds of errors, we can overestimate the frequency of some things when they come easily to mind. It is tempting to think that worldwide violence is at an all time high because instances of violence are constantly being reported by news outlets. The representativeness heuristic (cid:894)do(cid:374)"t rely o(cid:374) it(cid:895: linda question, bank teller and feminist or bank teller more likely, as you might expect, system 1 is to blame.
