A good way to start to answer this is historically. In the old days philosophy stood more or less for inquiry. aristotle (384-332 bce), for example, wrote about not only ethics and metaphysics but also biology, literary theory, political science and much more. Over time, many of these areas get carved off as disciplines of their own. Among other things, questions that, in the end at least, can"t be answered empirically. Two general contrasts: two sorts of starting points: (a) an idea or concept. (b) a shared feature of the world or our experience of it. Two places to start: (c) in medias res- in the middle of things (d) afresh starting with everything i believe is wrong: and a third contrast, pertaining to questions in metaphysics and epistemology in particular, 3. Two orders in which to proceed: (a) metaphysics first. (b) epistemology first.
