Philosophy 1200 Lecture Notes - Lecture 42: Paul Feyerabend, Engineering Council, Natural Sciences And Engineering Research Council
Document Summary
We saw in the previous lesson that paul feyerabend regarded science as just one more human activity that we should not constrain with any particular methods. Language and education produce conformity and the illusion of progress but not truth, according to feyerabend. Feminist philosophers also recognize and critique how language controls our perceptions of science. What they make explicit is not just that terms bring with them theoretical commitments, but also commitments to specific values, which empower some groups at the expense of others. Like most things, science costs money, often a lot of money to equip laboratories. In democratic societies the source of much of this funding is taxpayer dollars. Canada, for example, funds a national research council (nrc) for science and technology research. The nrc conducts research on the environment, health, aerospace, energy, and transportation, just to name a few areas. http://www. nrc-cnrc. gc. ca/eng/
