Berkeley claims that our experiences are not caused by a material world, but by god. Our experiences are ordered and involuntary because god is communicating with us. Our experiences are caused by an external world. There is no material world, only minds and ideas. Explains why our experiences have the features that they do. Does not offer an explanation of the character of our experiences because he thinks that no such explanation is possible. In particular, he argues that no causal explination of the character of our experience can be given that appeals to something outside of our experience. This is a form of scepticism about the external world. You cannot give a causal explanation of our experiences without appealing to our experience. To understand humes objections we must rst understand his views on causality. What is it that you perceive when you perceive one event causing another.
