2700 ethics and value theory october 19, 2016. Max happiness of the aggregate of all sentient beings. Distribution insensitive leaves no room for justice and equality. Requires overly complex calculations: cost-benefit analysis, knowledge deficits and time deficits, don"t have enough time to examine these properly, often affected by biases. Must be impartial leaves no room for partiality: each sentient being"s happiness counts for one and no more than one. Two ways to approach these concerns: say they aren"t valid who cares, modify the view accommodate these intuitions. Don"t directly achieve this goal" directly but indirectly through cost-benefit analysis. Is it ok to tell a white lie? should use utilitarian reasoning to determine the right thing to do: where the intermediate generalizations conflict appeal to utilitarian reasoning.
