Module objectives: define pharm, understand the naming system for drugs, understand drug regulations in canada, appreciate the barriers to drug transport, apply ph dependent ionization to drug transfer. The word pharmacology is derived from the greek words pharmakon meaning remedy and logos meaning study. Generally pharmacology is considered the study of drugs. Pharmacologist are not pharmacist (people who dispense drugs in a pharmacy: do not grow and harvest drugs like a farmer, pharmacology is the study of drugs. Term drug is used loosely as number of different types of therapeutics to treat ailments: drugs traditional drugs (i. e. chemical agents), biologics antibodies, hormones, natural health products herbals, vitamins, minerals.
