Module 12 drugs to lower blood cholesterol and triglycerides. Occurs when coronary blood circulation fails to adequately supply the heart with blood. Atherosclerosis: when plaque builds up on the walls of the arteries causes artery to narrow and results in decreased bf to heart. Risk for developing chd is directly related to the levels of cholesterol in the blood. People with high cholesterol = risk for developing chd: large efforts have gone to designing drugs to lower cholesterol blood levels. Cv disease causes 1/3 deaths in canada more than any other illness. Essential component of cell membrane, precursor of steroid hormones (i. e. testosterone, estrogen) and a precursor of bile salts. Obtain cholesterol via dietary sources (exogenous cholesterol) or through synthesis (endogenous cholesterol) which occurs primarily in the liver. 80% of cholesterol is synthesized by the liver, whereas 20% is obtained from dietary sources.
