Document Summary

This lecture will give us any idea of targets for therapy for neurological and psychiatric and movement disorders. Now we get to the lecture, we will go through the fundamentals today. Post synaptic density this area is dense, and this means there are lots of proteins, these are often neurotransmitter receptor proteins, that are clustered on the post and pre synaptic membrane. We have a lot of targets, vesicle loading, neuro peptides, the excitability of the axon, the post synaptic membrane, many things can be targeted by drugs to get the desired outcome. There are major nt classes, this is not limited however despite the complexity of the brain, there are relatively few. Glutamate is the main excitatory nt, inhibitory is gaba, and the other inhibitory nt is glycine which is largely more important in the spinal cord. Serotonin and dopamine are also other nts.
