Pharmacology 3620 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Acne Vulgaris, Oral Mucosa, Subcutaneous Tissue
Document Summary
Oral administration: most common route of drug administration, advantages, safe, due to the lag between administration and absorption, if too much is taken, there is a time period where intervention can be sought, economical, convenient, disadvantages: Incomplete/variable absorption: not all of the dose is delivered to the site of action (due to first pass metabolism) Rectal administration mucosa: some of the drugs given rectally are anesthetics, laxatives, etc, advantages, useful when patient is unconscious or vomiting, ~50% of administered drug bypasses first pass metabolism, can be dangerous: ex alcohol poisoning, disadvantages. Irritation of rectal mucosa: drug is directly injected into a suitable vein, advantages: Is administered sublingually and is effective in treating angina (chest pain due to narrowing of coronary artery) Pulmonary administration: the lung has a large surafce area and extensive capillary network, pulmonary absorption is rapid and in many cases instantenous, the pulmonary route of administration is suitable for gaseous and volatile drugs.
