Pharmacogenetics is the study of the genetic basis for variation in drug response. The first studies of relevance to pharmacogenetics occurred in the 1930"s. These related not to drugs but the genetic control of a taste response. The term pharmacogenetics was coined in 1959 by. Werner kalow at the university of toronto was one of the pioneers of pharmacogenetics (more later). The human genome project was published in february 2001. This revolutionized many areas in medicine including pharmacogenetics and the idea of. Pharmacogenetics relate the changes in dna to the pharmacokinetics (pk) and pharmacodynamics (pd) and drug response. Some of us will metabolize drugs faster than others. Some of us will have better receptor activation than others. These occur b/c of the changes in our dna. The group of 20 students were given two papers, one as a control and another with a low concentration of a drug.
