Physiology 1021 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Seminiferous Tubule, Sertoli Cell, Leydig Cell
Document Summary
Site of hormone and sperm production is the testis testes are located inside the scrotum, found externally in humans. In order to produce viable, healthy sperm, the testes must have a temperature that is approximately 2 degrees celsius below normal body temperature. Epididymus where sperm is stored, reabsorbs sperm that is not released. Vas deferens epididymis leads to here, storage and reabsorption, leads to where released. Seminiferous tubules inside the capsule protects open capsule, where sperm is made and then travels to epididymis, at least +120 million spermatozoa made per day. If we cross-section a seminiferous tubule, we"ll discover cells responsible for the production of sex hormones (primarily testosterone) and sperm being produced through spermatogenesis. In between 2 cells is where sperm is being made. Process of spermatogenesis is initiated at puberty when puberty is reached, sufficient testosterone is produced to enable spermatogenesis to occur.
