The ecf, which makes up the internal environment of the body, can be divided into the interstitial uid, Uid directly outside, bathing the cells, and the plasma, watery portion of the blood. For an average 70 kg person, the total body water (tbw) in all of the compartments is. 42 l. the icf contains 28 l (67% of tbw), the interstitial uid compartment contains 11. L (26. 4 tbw), and plasma contains 3 l (6. 6% of tbw) Plasma is a pale yellow uid that consists of 92% water and 8% other substances including rations, ions, nutrients, gases, and waste products.
