Physiology 2130 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Blood Plasma, Positive Feedback, Thermostat
Document Summary
The problem faced with the body and all of its cells is how to surround themselves with barriers that allow desired substances to pass in and waste to pass out while maintaining their internal environments. Physiology is the study of function in living organisms. It explores the mechanisms by which the organisms control their internal environments regardless of what happens in the outside (external) environment. Physiology also attempts to explain the physical and chemical factors responsible for both normal function and disease (also called pathology) Internal environment is the uid in which the cells of our body are bathed. This essentially consists of the interstitial uid and blood plasma. External environment is the region outside the body and also includes the space, and contents of the digestive, respiratory and urogenital tracts. Homeostasis is de ned as the maintenance of relatively stable conditions whiten the internal environment regardless of what is happening in the external environment.
