Physiology 2130 Lecture 14: Module 14 - Reproductive System
Document Summary
Module 14: - the reproductive system: each cell contains 23 chromosomes, sperm can contain either x or y chromosomes. Reproductive system intro: male reproductive system to produce testosterone + sperm, female to produce estrogen, progesterone. Penis urethra, glans penis, corpus spongiosum, corpuscavernosum. If btb did not develop properly, immune cells would attack and destroy sperm resulting in sterility. Leydig cells located in the interstitial space between the seminiferous tubules produce testosterone. Epididymis final maturation site and storage for sperm. Vas deferens carries sperm from epididymis to ejaculatory duct, where it drains into urethra. Seminal vesicles contribute a lot of fluid to semen, rich in fructose and enzymes to nourish the sperm. Prostate gland secretes enzymes and fluid to neutralize acid environment of urethra and vagina. Bulbourethral gland (cid:894)cowper"s gland(cid:895) fluid to neutralize ph. Urethra transports sperm during ejaculation and drains bladder during urination.
